About the fishing

PIKE and PERCH

We are very lucky to have so many species of fish.

Pike fishing is one of the main species our guests target when here. Irish pike fight very hard compared to their European cousins, and when you catch one of our hard fighting pike, you will be hooked.

There is no close season for pike fishing in Ireland, so we can fish all year round, but we try to avoid July and August due to higher water temperatures.

The best times for lure fishing and fly fishing are April to June, when fish are aggressively feeding after spawning in the shallows, before moving to deeper water for the summer months. Again, from September to October, fish start feeding aggressively to put weight on for winter.

There are very healthy stocks of pike due to the availability of so much bait fish. Fish over 1 metre are taken regularly, with very good numbers over 85 cm as well.

Dead bait fishing from November to February is a great time to catch big, fat pike feeding up for winter and also pre spawning.

Live baiting is prohibited in Ireland. We are a strictly catch and release fishing lodge.

Because of the nature of our location and the intricate, interconnected river and lake system, it is always possible to get shelter, and we can fish even if there happens to be high wind, so there are no lost fishing days. We have a guide available to book if required.

Float tube fishing is also very popular, fishing three quarters of a lake each day, as we have over 300 lakes within 20 minutes of our location. This can be guided if required.

COARSE FISHING

Bream, Tench, Roach, and Hybrids.

We have probably some of the best coarse fishing in all of Ireland. Many Irish specimen fish have been taken in this area.

There is private access right at the cabin, and we also have plenty of choice by boat. We can provide pre baiting and raking out of swims.

Wild BROWN TROUT

We have our nearest river, the River Annalee, which can be fished by fly or by spinning.

Lough Sheelin is one of the best trout lakes in Europe, and we can also fish it by fly or spinning. Sheelin can also produce some big pike and perch.

About the area

Echoes of the Gaelic Past in Cavan Town

Cavan town, at the heart of Ireland’s Lake County, carries a quiet but layered history shaped by Gaelic clans and later plantation settlers. The 13th century Cavan Cathedral of Saints Patrick and Felim stands as a focal point, its serene interior reflecting the town’s long spiritual heritage. Nearby, the ruins of Clough Oughter Castle rise dramatically from a small island on Lough Oughter, a medieval stronghold linked to the powerful O’Reilly clan. The surrounding countryside is dotted with ancient ringforts and early Christian sites, reminders that this landscape has been lived in and defended for more than a thousand years.

Cultural Corners and Rainy Day Retreats

Cavan offers a rich selection of indoor experiences that reveal the character of the region. The Cavan County Museum in nearby Ballyjamesduff presents engaging exhibitions on local history, from prehistoric artefacts to stories of Irish emigration. In town, the Ramor Theatre hosts drama, music, and film screenings, providing a lively cultural calendar throughout the year. Cosy cafés and traditional pubs offer warm refuge, often accompanied by live Irish music sessions that bring together locals and visitors in relaxed surroundings.

Lakeside Rambles and Greenway Trails

County Cavan is famed for its network of lakes and gentle drumlin hills, making it a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. The Lough Oughter waterway system invites kayaking, angling, and leisurely boat trips through reed lined channels and quiet inlets. The Cavan Burren Park, a short drive away, features walking trails across limestone landscapes scattered with megalithic tombs and glacial erratics. For cyclists and walkers, the Cavan Way and local greenways provide peaceful routes through rolling farmland and wooded stretches that showcase the county’s unhurried charm.

Wildlife Havens Among the Reeds and Woodlands

The lakes and wetlands around Cavan support a rich variety of wildlife. Lough Oughter Special Protection Area is known for wintering waterfowl, including whooper swans and tufted ducks, while herons and kingfishers patrol the quiet shores year round. Otters can sometimes be spotted at dusk along secluded banks. In woodland pockets and hedgerows, red squirrels, pine martens, and a chorus of songbirds thrive, making the region especially rewarding for nature lovers seeking Ireland’s softer, wilder side.
