Location

About the area

Quick orientation, Easkey in County Sligo

Easkey, sometimes spelled Easky, is a small Atlantic coast village in County Sligo, in the west of Ireland. It sits where the Easkey River meets the sea, a compact community rather than a big city, so there are no formal urban districts to navigate. Think of Easkey as a gateway to the rugged Sligo coastline, within easy driving distance of larger centres such as Sligo town, while retaining a distinctly rural, maritime character.

Heritage highlights, ruins to megaliths

History in and around Easkey is quietly tangible, from the ruined churchyards and old stone bridges that mark generations of local life, to scattered ringforts and standing stones on the surrounding moorlands. A short drive brings you to County Sligo's broader prehistoric legacy, with the Carrowmore megalithic cemetery and other Neolithic sites, while 18th and 19th century grand houses and follies, such as Lissadell, speak to the later layers of the landscape. The result is a patchwork of small, atmospheric ruins and celebrated regional landmarks, all within easy reach of the village.

Indoor options, culture, crafts and conviviality

When the Atlantic weather turns, Easkey and nearby towns offer a surprisingly rich slate of indoor pursuits. Warm, traditional pubs host live Irish music sessions and storytelling, ideal for a cultural evening. Small community centres stage talks, exhibitions and occasional craft workshops, while surf schools and local operators provide wetsuit hire and briefings under cover. For museum displays, galleries and theatrical programming head to Sligo town, where regional museums present archaeology, maritime history and the life and work of W. B. Yeats.

Coastal pursuits, surfing, fishing and walks

Easkey is best known outdoors for its coastline and river. Easkey Strand and the reef break offshore attract surfers of all levels, with local instructors and seasonal lessons. The Easkey River is prized by anglers for salmon and sea trout, and easy bank access makes for classic Irish river fishing. Coast and cliff walks offer panoramic views of Donegal Bay and the Ox Mountains, while lowland loop walks explore bog, farmland and shoreline. Further afield, Benbulben and the Dartry Mountains present serious hillwalking and scrambling for those seeking bigger days out.

Coastal wildlife, seabirds, seals and river life

The wildlife around Easkey reflects its mix of river, strand and open Atlantic. Seabirds and coastal waders are common on the strand and estuaries, while grey seals haul out on offshore rocks and are often visible from headlands. Dolphins and porpoises are occasional visitors to the bay, and the Easkey River supports otters, Atlantic salmon and sea trout. Birdwatchers will find migrant species in the estuaries and wetlands nearby, making the area a rewarding stop for naturalists as well as surfers and walkers.

    We felt at home

We loved the cottage. As soon as we entered, we felt at home. The cottage was beautifully situated, lovely and quiet. Inside, it was bigger than it looks from the outside.

Hostess Patricia rang and texted on a number of occasions to make sure everything was OK and to ask if we needed anything. This was not necessary as she had thought of everything. She was a lovely, kind and very considerate lady. Thank you so much. Kindest regards, Cilla & Bryan.
